Cotopaxi sits at about 6,360 feet on both banks of the Arkansas River, roughly 33 miles west of Cañon City along US-50. Prospector Henry Thomas named it after Ecuador's Cotopaxi volcano, and a post office opened here in 1880. Two years later, 63 Russian Jewish immigrants arrived to farm under a colony sponsored by mining investor Emanuel Saltiel. Rocky land and failed crops ended the colony by 1884, but many of the families stayed in Colorado, and some went to work for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, whose line still follows the river through town. Today Cotopaxi is a quiet community of ranches, cabins, and river properties, with its own school district and a general store that has been open since the 1920s.
